SAP Business One on SQL Server or SAP HANA: which to choose
5 min readUpdated October 3, 2026
SAP Business One comes in two database versions: Microsoft SQL Server and SAP HANA. Both use the same application and the same processes, but infrastructure, analytical performance and operating cost change.
SAP Business One for SQL Server
The traditional deployment: a Windows server and a Microsoft SQL Server database. Many companies already know this technology, specialists are plentiful and the initial infrastructure investment is usually lower.
SAP Business One for SAP HANA
SAP HANA is an in-memory database. Its strength is analytics: reports, dashboards and searches over large data volumes with very short response times. The database server runs on Linux and needs more RAM than an equivalent SQL Server installation.
How to decide
- Data and transaction volume: with a long history or heavy reports, HANA makes a difference.
- Need for real-time analytics: if management relies on up-to-date dashboards, that points to HANA.
- Infrastructure and team: if your team knows Windows and SQL Server well, that version is simpler to operate.
- Budget: HANA needs servers with more memory; in the cloud that means a higher monthly cost.
- Add-ons and developments: confirm the add-ons you need are available for the version you choose.
Can you switch later?
Yes. SAP provides tools to migrate an SAP Business One database from SQL Server to SAP HANA. It is a technical project worth planning: add-ons, developments, queries and reports are reviewed before migrating.
