SAP Business One hosting: your own server or managed cloud
5 min readUpdated October 3, 2026
SAP Business One can run on a server in your office or on hosting managed by specialists. There is no single answer: it depends on how much you want to invest, who will operate the platform and how much an hour without the system costs you.
Your own server (on-premise)
The company buys the server and takes care of everything else: power, cooling, internet, operating system, database, patches, antivirus, backups and failure recovery. It gives full control, but requires an upfront investment and staff to look after it.
Managed hosting
SAP Business One runs on the infrastructure of a specialized provider that also operates it: monitoring, updates, security and backups. The company pays for a service and its users connect securely from anywhere.
What to compare
- Investment: buying hardware and infrastructure licenses versus a monthly cost.
- Availability: power redundancy, connectivity and what happens if the server fails.
- Backups: frequency, retention, where they are stored and whether anyone tests that they can be restored.
- Security: firewall, patches, antivirus and multi-factor authentication for remote access.
- Remote access: remote desktop, VPN or web portal for branches and mobile users.
- SAP Business One upgrades: who plans, tests and applies them.
When each one makes sense
Your own server makes sense when the company already has a data center and an IT team that runs it. Managed hosting makes sense when you prefer to focus on the business, have several locations or remote users, or do not want to depend on a single server in the office.
